Do You Experience the “Click” Too?

Sometimes when I’m working on a project I just draw a blank.

I know what my topic is and I know what needs to be done, but I just can’t get motivated…or just don’t feel like working on it because the concept just hasn’t “clicked” yet.  Some people can simply start a project and keep going to completion.  Me?  Can’t do that. I have to wait until the universe is in proper alignment and that marks my time to be able to start.  I physically can’t start until it all just clicks together.

But, once it has clicked, I’m pretty much motivated and unstoppable and working at my peak.  The “click” usually happens when I’m not concentrating so hard on the topic and I’m just doing some random stuff.  If I’m pacing and walking around trying to force an idea, it doesn’t happen. If I give up and decide to drive to put gas in the car, the perfect idea pops into my head as the gas station attendant opens my gas tank (for those not in NJ, yeah, we can’t pump our own gas here – we consider it a luxury especially in the snow and rain).

Ideas surface when you are not thinking of them. They like to generate in the sub-conscious.  They want to be the ones that come to you, not you conjuring them up! But when they are ready, they come 100 miles a minute and non-stop!  What you do with them when they present themselves to you is very important.

When product ideas come to you, you want to be sure you capture and organize them so they aren’t lost. A lost idea is potentially a lost product.  You can get overwhelmed with ideas for products for your business, but there is a way to make sure that you capture your best product ideas and organize them so they build upon on another – and build your business.   It’s the Idea Organization System by Dr. Jeanette Cates. I’m using it these days because I get ideas popping out of everywhere now.  I’m happy to be an affiliate for her system and to recommend it.

Now, there are two things I get stuck on most. The first is how it should look, page layout, the perfect colors, images, charts.  I don’t fuss much over the “right words” for the job. But I will spend three hours selecting a color. The second is formulating the perfect concept. I want to make sure I understand exactly what I’m trying to accomplish with whatever I’m working on. Until I’m comfortable with these two thing, I’m useless.

So, all this to say…

When it comes to creating your product, understand what your “click” is.  Product creation doesn’t come naturally to everyone – and everyone can’t create every type of product. If you are one that it doesn’t come naturally to, it can seem like struggle to get it complete while others are whipping up 30 videos a night. Understanding that one thing that makes you click will help you to better understand the point that you’ll be most productive and then start working in that productive time. You’ll be in your “zone”.

I sure hope I’m making sense!

This is how I write my blog posts. Until the click comes its just a title. Sometimes I need to wait for the click between sentences. LOL
But sure enough. I back away & let it simmer and click… :-)

    Hi Vernon,

LOL Simmer and click, that’s cool. Its really funny waiting, but when you have a deadline to get something done and your brain is on “off”…that becomes a dire situation LOL

Another great post Gwen. I’ve known about my click for some time. I call it “catching the thread.” Once I catch the thread (more like it catches me), I can just real it in, like a fish on a line.

I’ve learned to archive and organize ideas, immediately. I’ve gotten great ideas while laying in bed. Or awakening me in the middle of the night. I used to try to remember them in the morning. Fat chance. Know I keep a pad and portable recorder on my night table.

Keep it coming Gwen. When are you going to write a book? I need to get all of your great advice in one package :)

    Hi there Gwen,

We have a lot in common. We are both in New Jersey and we both need inspiration to make things happen. To be honest that was one of the things that concerned me when I entered this blog challenge, will I be able to write something every day for 30 days.

I find that my inspiration comes from speaking with others, friends, fellow bloggers like your (wink), and master mind partners. Being in this 30 day challenge has kept me talking to everyone (smile). Thanks so much for your click post.

    Hi Gwen,

Sounds like you need to play more often then! LOL.

Actually, I’m the opposite. Inspiration comes from “perspiration” in my case. Sometimes I have to force myself to get started but once I do, at some point (relatively soon after starting), I get that click and I’m off to the races.

    Hi Kazi,

I like that analogy, I often have great ideas when I’m sleeping (don’t get me started on my dreams LOL) and it’s very rare that I remember them when I wake up. But I know I would never wake up and write them down, so maybe a recorder is what I need.

Thank you so much for the compliment – I’ll see what I can do about that LOL

    Hi Nicki,

Definitely, I can gather all the information I need, but I need some kind of light to go off to let me know I’m ready – kind of like a timer on a microwave – letting me know the idea is “cooked” and ready LOL

    Hi Kevin,

Some days I want to write 2 or 3 posts…then other days…nothing. No clue. But like you said, it needs to be inspired and like you said, others in the blog challenge are so diverse there’s always something write about. It gets tough!

    Gwen ~

Don’t ya just envy those folks that can whip up a dozen blog posts in a day or create ten videos in an evening? Well, allow me to say …

I’M NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE!!

Like yourself, I have to feel the “click” or absolutely nothing gets created or accomplished. I’ll put it in these terms …

IT’S LIKE MY OVEN HAS TO PRE-HEAT. :-)

I’ve tried hundreds of times to force myself to produce something when I haven’t yet felt the “click” – a to-do list, a blog post or article, a calendar of upcoming events. Forget it. Ain’t gonna happen without the “click”.

    Birds of a feather …

    Hey Gwen,
I experience “the click” too. What helps me is keeping a swipe file. I keep a swipe file for everything so I will always have a resource to pull from. This article also reminds me the importance of writing ideas down whenever they come to me. Thanks for this.

I can do both. Sometimes I can just sit down and write…that is usually when I am very familiar with my subject.

Other times I have to let it lie until it comes together. I like to write down all my ideas. I have note books full of ideas. Some have come to fruition and others have not. I don’t worry about the ones that don’t.
