Making Your Ideas Stick

“The more people who know your idea, the more your idea is worth.”

-Seth Godin, Unleashing the Ideavirus

So how are you going to get your ideas out there and make them stick?  You’re going to have to have solid content in your information products.  And you will have to boost that by having a good, quality design and possibly using multimedia such as videos and audios.  You can’t be boring! And you’re going to have to be different than everyone else – it’s a tough and competitive world out there.
When it comes to sharing your ideas and teaching techniques or skills important in your niche, especially your own new techniques that you have personally discovered, you don’t just want to teach or tell. You want to inspire and motivate.  That’s how you create the “ideavirus.”

How do you know if you’ve inspired or motivated? Well, if you are presenting face-to-face in a live seminar or class, or even one-on-one with your coaching student, that’s easy. If you’re not very motivating, you will see people yawning, cleaning their nails, typing away on their laptops, playing Free Cell on their BlackBerry (or my new favorite, “Words with Friends” on my iPad!) or even just staring at you like they are thinking “Why? WHY are you wasting my time!?”   But when folks are grinning and watching you alertly, asking questions and you hear the “buzz” about your information during breaks and after your presentation, you know you did good.

You want your information products that you create to have the same effect. Remember a few days ago I talked about the “click”? Well that’s from my point of view as a product creator.  But you also want your customers to feel a “click” as well. Maybe more of a light bulb going off in their case, an “Aha!” moment.  That can’t happen if they are feeling detached from you and your content or if they are bored or if they are confused.  It doesn’t matter whether it’s an ebook, video or audio with handouts. You want your information to be:

  1. compelling
  2. simple
  3. and most important – memorable.
You want to express your ideas in a way that people can actually remember them and retell the story to others.  And you also want to impress your customers with your knowledge and expertise so they will remember you when they retell the story!
What are some things you can do to make your ideas stick?

Nice post Gwen. I especially like the idea of conveying your ideas in story form. Telling them is natural and we tend to remember stories, don’t we?

I think this is one of the toughest assignments for online marketers, Gwen.

You’ve got to find some ways to let your personality shine through your products and programs – use descriptive word pictures and images that “stick” in people’s minds. Telling stories is always something that will resonate with others.

You’re right. When you’re physically present, you can see how people are reacting and adjust accordingly if they’re falling asleep. But online, it’s totally unpredictable so you have to work even harder to capture and hold the attention of your target audience.

    Great topic!
