I think I first got "connected" when I was in a computer store looking for floppy disks or something. They had something called a "2400 bps modem" and it seemed to be on clearance. I don't think it was more than $20. But it looked fancy and high tech with a lot of cables and less than $20 and worked with my computer, so I grabbed it. It came with the America Online CD. I do remember using it and somehow downloaded what was probably my very first shareware/freeware. And getting a virus! Yes, a virus on a Mac. It wasn't a nasty virus, it was just something that made a pair of eyeballs and feet follow my cursor around on the screen (it was actually kind of cute). Such memories! I discovered the Net back to 1990, because I studied Applied Mathematics then and we had access two hours a week to the VAX main server! And yes, I still learn from people like you!
