Two Products in One

A very nice gentleman who recently purchased a product from me requested a refund.  I gave him instructions on how to get his refund, then asked him for feedback so that I can update the ebook if necessary. He said he didn’t have any feedback and that there’s nothing wrong with the ebook – it’s just that it wasn’t for him. There was no way for him to know this until he actually read it.  He wasn’t really sure what to do with information.  I explained to him that was excellent feedback, even if he didn’t think so.  I learned two things:

1. I probably need to be more clear on my sales page on what the product is. (I think I’m pretty clear, but maybe I can be more detailed or something). Maybe it’s time to put a video on my sales page.

2. The content may have been too “advanced” for him.  I thought about this when I was writing it.  I realized that in order to understand some of the stuff I was explaining in the ebook, one would need to have some experience with creating an information product. In my ebook I explain concepts rather than go into detail about “how to do it” (I was saving that for the successive wave of multi-mini-modules – don’t ask).

So what I realized is that I can actually take the content in my book, and perhaps by adding a few definitions, removing the more “advanced” concepts, and organizing it slightly differently, I could have another product – a Beginner’s Guide or a Volume I.  That would automatically allow me to use my “advanced” book as an upsell product or a Volume II.

Not that this s is a new idea or anything, but it’s definitely better than creating a Beginner’s version first, then having to write even MORE to create an Advanced version!

Anyway, that was just a random thought and I hope it’s helpful to someone  :)

I like this post! You and I think alike. No matter what someone tells us, we understand that is feedback of some sort and we can use it to improve upon our product/service. Thanks!

    Hi Andrew,

Yes! If you take the time to understand where someone is coming from with anything to do with your product – even if they say its the best thing since sliced bread – you stand to gain some great feedback. Negative or positive or neutral is always helpful!

Now you’re talkin’ turkey! Great plan and even greater attitude. With the changes you discussed, I bet you’re going to see a remarkable difference in the kind of feedback you receive. :-)

Get busy and go for it!

This was very helpful. I think it’s cool that you were able to discern this from essentially “no” info from this guy. I like the idea of video or even screen shots (maybe of the table of contents) so people can see what it is they are getting. I also agree with Melanie about your great attitude – I don’t think I would have thought of this. But you’ve helped with the concepts about doing the two products out of one. Sometimes I think we think we need to put EVERYTHING into one product or people won’t think it’s worthwhile and that’s not the truth.
    Thanks for the insights

    Hi Terrie,

You are correct. I personally like a lot of information (I feel like I’m getting my money’s (monies?) worth) that way – the more modules, workbooks and parts to it the more I’ll pay for it LOL But the reality, that’s TOO MUCH information, especially if you are learning something new! So something smaller and more simple can worth way more in terms of your reader’s success! Definitely something to consider.
