Content Creation: A Lesson From Burger King

Have you visited the Burger King website?  Well, it’s really cool.  They have these sliders that let you choose the content you want to see on their website.  Wait… did I say that correctly?  Yes, they let YOU choose the content YOU want to see on THEIR website.  This is truly in line with their branding of  ”having it your way.” (I admit it took me a while to put 2 and 2 together on that one LOL).

Of course this takes some technical savvy to do and I’m not expecting that most people can do this, but it got me thinking about content and products.   Go to their site and play around with the 3 sliders at the top.  Of course I set mine as shown below because I was more interested in Food than Fun or the King.

Lately on my blog we’ve been talking about video and why many products force us with video-only information. There are reasons that people do it in one medium only, but I think that the feedback is most people would like to have options for receiving your content. But that’s thinking about the same content in multiple formats.  The question is how do we give people the  specific content they want out of all the options we have available?

As product creators, this is definitely something to consider when you are creating your ebooks or products.  Here are some ideas I can think of at the moment (until I go to pick up and eat my Whopper and milkshake from burger king LOL):

  1. Create “beginner/advanced”  ”newbie/guru”  ”novice/expert”  guides on the topic so people can pick the level they want to learn at.
  2. “Build-your-own” products – create you content modularly so that people can choose the specific topics they want.
  3. Make more use of hyper-linking so that people can jump to the part of your product they are most interested in. The web was built on hyper-linking, but I think it’s so under-used!
  4. Just ask them what they want/need and how they want it, and create it.

Lot’s of things to think about especially as we try to create products that are unique and stand out from the rest!  We’re creating products at a time where most of it’s “been there done that” – its been and done 100s of times before us.  So creativity is what’s going to help us to stand out.

Brilliant blog post as always Gwen!

So, Burger king is proving the fact that Content is King and it rules more if you can have it your way! ((smiles))

    Hi Gwen,

This post is very timely as I’m in the process of creating a short report. You reminded me of the value of hyper-linking my titles so that people can jump to that section, if they choose to. I personally enjoy doing that when I have that option, but it’s so easy to become overwhelmed and forget when it’s time to create my own.

Excellent and useful post as we’ve all come to expect :)

Tip #1 is one I hadn’t considered and it’s a darn good tip. Keeping in mind that your subscribers/customers/clients are at different levels of learning will help you to do a much better job of zeroing in on their needs. Thanks!

It really should be obvious, but I think we all need to stop and remind ourselves to “Ask” people how we can serve them. So simple, yet so overlooked. I’d like to put out a survey or two soon and I’ll be anxious to see what kinds of responses I get. Have you ever used Google Docs or Survey Monkey?

    Keep the good stuff coming!

I love it! I would have never visited the Burger King site but that “having it your way” should be the slogan we all adopt for our customers. If we don’t make everything user-friendly, we are only hurting our own business. Super duper info :)

    Hi Gwen,

Excellent Advice!! I am creating the different guide levels like you suggested for “beginner/advanced” ”newbie/guru” ”novice/expert”, and the products are building are modular, along with the membership levels when it becomes available.

And of course, listening to feedback from customers creates positive relationships and great source for future upgrades and new products.

    Hi Gwen,

What a great post. I have used Camtasa before but have not provided a table of contents that will allow them to skip to the area they wanted. I will be sure to do so going forward. This is one way I can make let them have it their way.

Thanks for the insight and happy eating,

    Hi Gwen,

All I have to say is wow… never ever thought of that!

I’m only used to static-ish pages and blog type things.

    Pretty neat idea indeed!

Even though I am a vegetarian, I love this post. You have really got me thinking from the customer/client point of view in a very specific, option rich way – I’ll be thinking about this for a while so many thanks

    Gwen,

Burger King is a good company to watch to get ideas for unique and viral sites.

They put this “fake web cam” site up in 2005 to promote a new chicken sandwich and it was really popular for a while:

    http://www.bk.com/en/us/campaigns/subservient-chicken.html

It just goes to show you, instead of being lazy and swiping headlines or bullet points, look at what good ideas people are using and adapt it for yourself, rather than just copying.

    I remember that chicken! LOL

I agree and when you adapt it for yourself, you have something new – and people will copy you :)

    Hi Anne,

You’re welcome. Many times we get caught up in our own product and forget that it’s really for the customer – we already know the stuff, so why not tailor to their needs?

    Thanks for visiting,

    Hi Henry,

That’s great to hear. The relationship with your customer is very precious – you want them to remain your customer, so listen to them and give them what they want! They will complain and nag, that’s just the nature of some people – others will thank you to death! Feedback either way is good for your products.

BTW, can’t wait to hear more about your service!

    Thanks for visiting,
    Gwen
