So Thanksgiving is just 2 days away. I was hoping that I could kind of ease into it throughout Wednesday, by having an easy workload. Ugh, I was very, very wrong! Total opposite. I have a tight deadline to complete an eLearning course that is butting right up against turkey day on both sides (Wednesday and Friday)! Even with my tight workload I have managed to do my part for the dinner festivities – I bought 2 cheesecakes from the Cheesecake Factory. One big item off my task list I say!
So I considered bringing my laptop to turkey dinner to take advantage of the extra hours I can work….while I wait for the cook to complete our 8, 9, 10 course meal (as I mentioned, I’ve done my part).
I overheard one poor lady in line for the bus (commuter’s nightmare). She works on Wall Street, some sort of stock market type. Poor lady has to report to work at 7:15am the day after Thanksgiving! Can you imagine having to wake up and report to work extra early after eating yourself into a food coma the night before? This was all said with a grin on her face, like “no big deal”.
A friend of mine (another very hardworker) has told me that she will be working on Friday as well – even though the company officially is closed. She didn’t seem “irked” about it in anyway.
So – what makes one not mind working on, before or after Thanksgiving, or any holiday? Well, it’s one thing: LOVE of the job and the work they do! Can you imagine having a job that you don’t mind coming in on the weekends, working at home after hours or…after you have gained 10 pounds by eating just a little too much stuffing the day before?
Too many times I hear people complain about how they either hate their job, or they don’t want to go to work because they are unfulfilled, or they don’t want to be near their co-workers. Very sad thing for them to be in a position of having to live out such a large percentage of their life – hating it!
One weekend I was bored and I said “I’m bored, I wish I was working.” Someone (musician guy) actually got very upset with me and said “How pathetic you must be to WANT to be at work. You should get a hobby or find more interesting things to do!” Of course I told him “I love the work I do and I rather be doing something productive, than just sitting around doing nothing – and why not work if I love it.” Then he says “Well, I can understand that because I love my job too.” (musician). For those of us who are NOT musicians, what’s wrong with us loving our jobs as well
My advice is to love your job, love your work, love your business. You spend at least 33% – 50% of your day working, commuting to/from work, thinking about work, talking about work. Be sure its a job you feel positive about – make sure its a job that brings a smile to your face. You don’t want to spend 33% – 50% of your day depressed or down just because you need to make a living!
Over the holiday weekend, just take some time and contemplate how you really feel about the work you do. If you are finding its bearing down on you, make a resolution to make a change!
