I found a great post on Alex Fyfe’s blog regarding meditation while on the go. The key point is to take some time to focus on yourself and what you are thinking. A lot of times we pay too much attention to what we are “doing” or what we need to do, or what other people are doing. But why not take time to think about thinking – that meta-cognition that drives us subconsciously (or unconsciously).
Have you ever just thought about why you love a certain color or a certain smell or a certain food? Or did your thinking simply stop at “I like the color green”. Have you ever thought about what you are thinking about a large pile of papers sitting on your desk waiting for you when you step into the office early Monday morning? Or did you simply stop at “Look at all those %$^$@* papers on my desk!”
We have all wondered “what the heck was I thinking when I ….” (e.g. “what the heck was I thinking when I bought that horrible pair of 5″ heels that wrap around my ankles and make my feet bend to awkward ankles that I can’t even stand up straight, let alone walk 3 feet in”) – that’s your need for meta-cognition, thinking about what you were thinking to help avoid thinking that way again! LOL
But seriously, understanding your own thinking can be a self-nurturing way to help bring about balance you need in your life. If you find that your mind is always in a frenzy, or you are always feeling anxious or nervous or skeptical or suspicious or worried, then take time to learn to meditate and learn to learn about yourself. Think about what you are thinking about things, ideas, people. This inner reflection will help you get to a point where you are focusing on yourself, and what you need in your life and ultimately how you can make you happy.
