Tip: Do a Little Quality Assurance on Your Own Work

If you really want to make an impression with the work you submit to clients or managers or other team members, spend a little time doing a little Quality Assurance (QA) on your work before sending it over.  Make sure your work is of the highest quality, regardless of how insignificant you may think it is.  For example, if you are submitting something that is written:

  • Always double-check your spelling.  Spell check doesn’t check for improper use of words. So if you usually sign your emails something like “Regards, Gwen”  make sure you didn’t misspell the word and type “Retards, Gwen”!   Retards in this case is not misspelled and won’t be picked up by your spell check!
  • Make sure what you are saying is clear and concise. Re-read it to make sure you are saying what you really want to say.
  • Use proper punctuation and capitalization
  • Check your margins and spacing – are they consistent?

Here’s a tip: Think about what you expect when you purchase any type of product from a store.  When you buy clothing do you want threads hanging out of the seams? When you buy potato chips, do you want the chips crushed by the time you open the bag? When you buy software, do you want to see misspelled words in the interface?   Check all the small things, regardless of the type of work you are submitting. Doing a little QA on your own work will help you to make a good impression with clients and others!
