If you have done any kind of acting (or maybe seen a movie about acting), you have probably heard your acting teacher to tell you to ask yourself “What’s my motivation?”
Well, what’s good for actors, is good for the rest of us. Have you ever taking a minute or two to simply reflect on why you enjoy doing certain things – but despise doing others. Or why some tasks you will fulfill with a smile on your face and other cause the dreaded corrugated forehead? Perhaps you had more motivation for completing the more enjoyable tasks. Its important to understand exactly what that motivation is.
Quite naturally if you run your own business, one of your biggest motivators might be MONEY (heck, that is good enough motivation for most of us). But thing about some other things that might be motivating you to do a good job at work, in your business, or even household chores. What causes you to want to see something through completion? Here are some possible motivators:
- MONEY (of course)
- Recognition
- Time off from work
- Respect
- Power
- Freedom
- Personal growth
- Receiving gifts or rewards
- Sense of accomplishment
- Comfort
- Energy or Vitality
This is just a quick list of things. We will revisit this topic in the future and see what else we can add to the list. But for now, before starting any new task, don’t forget to ask yourself “What is my motivation?” Perhaps that may help you to get through some of the less enjoyable ones, just by focusing on the reasons you are doing it!
